Race Team Orientations and Tryout Information

If you're interested in being a part of the intercollegiate racing team, we will have three on-the-water orientation sessions before tryouts. The first of those sessions is today, Friday, August 24th at 2:30pm at Lake Crabtree. Other sessions are listed below.
Friday, Aug. 24
Wednesday, Aug. 29
Friday, Aug. 31
There will be transportation provided to and from Lake Crabtree for participants with a pick up at the loop beside Talley Student Union at 2pm and a later pick up at 3pm. Should you wish to get there on your own, here are directions, but please note we are at Lake Crabtree, NOT Lake Wheeler.
These sessions will provide you with an introduction to our racing practice, give you an opportunity to learn about our boats before tryouts, and if you're rusty, give you a chance to get the cobwebs out before you're evaluated for the team. Although you will not necessarily need sailing experience to tryout, these orientation sessions are focused primarily on people who anticipate trying out for the competitive race team. We will have novice sailing opportunities and teaching through the Friday Flotilla sessions.
Please wear closed-toe shoes. Tennis shoes are acceptable if they do not have a black, marking sole. Light, wicking fabric is good, as well. Sunscreen, hats and sunglasses are also recommended. Be sure to bring dry clothes to change into should you need to.
Ahead of your arrival, please complete these two forms. You can submit these forms by emailing them to [email protected]. You may also print these and bring them with you, but we'd prefer electronic to be more sustainable.       Student Release                 Health Form
Tryouts will be held on Sunday, September 2nd. We will begin on campus at 9:30AM. We will meet at Talley Student Union (Room # to be confirmed, so we'll update you). Following in-classroom instruction and interviews, we'll move tryouts to Lake Crabtree. Transportation to and from the lake will be provided.
If you are interested in participating in Offshore racing, we will be evaluating candidates through dinghy tryouts, so we recommend taking advantage of the orientation sessions in advance of tryouts. You'll also need to plan on attending tryouts on Sunday, September 2nd.
We have a Race Team information session scheduled for next Thursday, August 30th at 6:30PM (before the Club meeting) at Riddick Hall, Room 314. This meeting will be to learn more about race team, intercollegiate sailing, and what we'll be expecting at tryouts. Please make it a priority to attend this meeting if you plan on trying out for the Race Team. In the meantime, if you'd like to learn more about the team, visit the website and read up on our program.
