NC State Hosts Inaugural Thomas H. Stafford, Jr. Trophy Regatta, Honoring a Wolfpack Icon

On Saturday, February 22, NC State will host the inaugural Thomas H. Stafford Jr. Trophy Regatta at our home venue of Lake Crabtree County Park. This event honors a friend of the sailing program, Dr. Thomas H. Stafford Jr., who has been a dedicated advocate for student life at NC State University and throughout the Wolfpack community for over four decades. Dr. Stafford has served many roles at NC State including as Vice Chancellor for Student Affairs from 1983 until his retirement in 2012. For many years, Dean Stafford has kindly spent time with the sailing program often hosting the team at the Memorial Belltower for tours and stories during our traditional spring team photos.
“The passion Dean Stafford has for NC State is unparalleled,” said sailing head coach Dana Magliola. “He’s an inspiration. We aim to bring this same level of pride and enthusiasm every day representing NC State in college sailing.”

The inaugural Stafford Trophy regatta will include teams from the NC State's home conference, the South Atlantic Intercollegiate Sailing Association (SAISA) Conference, including Davidson College, the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, UNC Wilmington, the University of South Carolina, the University of Tennessee, Vanderbilt University, and Wake Forest University, in addition to the host NC State.
The event will begin at Lake Crabtree County Park on Saturday, February 22 with an opening ceremony beginning at 9:45AM at the Lake Crabtree Waterfront (near the viewing tower). Racing will commence directly after the opening ceremony and will continue depending on conditions until around 5:00PM. The event will feature giveaways of a limited-edition event poster created by NC State alumnae, and former Wolfpack sailor, Weatherley Tripp. Teams will compete in a series of races throughout the event with the combined low team score securing the regatta win.
