2026 Sailpack Oriental Regatta an Epic 10th Edition

NC State Wins 10th Annual SailPack Oriental Intercollegiate Regatta

ORIENTAL, NC (April 4–5, 2026) — The 10th Annual SailPack Oriental Intercollegiate Regatta delivered a full spectrum of conditions and competition, showcasing both the depth of collegiate sailing and the unmatched hospitality of the Oriental community.

Saturday: Building Breeze and Early Lead

Teams gathered Saturday morning at Bow to Stern Boating Center for the skippers’ meeting and opening ceremony, where they were welcomed by Mayor Sally Belangia and members of the Oriental community. Breakfast, provided by the Nautical Collective of Oriental, including the Neuse Sailing Association, The Sailing Club of Oriental, and the Oriental Dinghy Club, set the tone for a weekend rooted in community support.

Racing got underway by 10 a.m. on the Neuse River, beginning in lighter breeze around 5–7 mph before building into a steady west-southwesterly 10–15 mph by late morning. With light chop, shifting pressure, and afternoon gusts, teams were tested on both speed and tactical decision-making as conditions evolved throughout the day.

On shore, Lou Mac Park served as a central gathering point for sailors, coaches, and spectators, with teams relaxing under the oaks and connecting with one another and the local community between rotations. Three full A-Division rotations and two full B-Division rotations were completed, with NC State establishing an early lead, followed closely by Queen’s University, UC San Diego, and Jacksonville.

Saturday evening’s traditional North Carolina whole hog pig pickin’ brought the entire event together. Sailors, coaches, host families, and community members gathered at Bow to Stern for an evening of great food, live music from The Dunies featuring NC State sailor Jo-Jo Morgan, and a special guest appearance from members of the William & Mary team. With ideal weather and a full day of racing behind them, the evening reflected the unique combination of competition and community that defines SailPack Oriental. Sunday: Heavy Air and a Shift in Venue

Sunday presented a completely different test. A Small Craft Advisory and winds building into the upper 20s, with gusts exceeding 30 mph, forced racing off the Neuse River and into the more protected waters of Smith Creek inside the bridge.

Even in the more sheltered venue, conditions were demanding. Strong, funneling breeze created a challenging racecourse, with frequent capsizes, equipment strain, and a handful of breakdowns across the fleet. The day required resilience, teamwork, and quick recoveries from every team on the water.

Racing began with B-Division to even the rotation balance, followed by additional sets in both divisions to close out the regatta. Despite pressure from Queen’s, Jacksonville, UC San Diego, and a surging Christopher Newport team, NC State maintained control throughout the day, securing first place in both A and B Divisions and the overall regatta victory. The win marks NC State’s first SailPack Oriental title since 2022.

A Complete Weekend of College Sailing

Across two days, SailPack Oriental 2026 showcased the full range of collegiate sailing, from light-air tactics to heavy-air survival. The depth of the fleet, combined with rapidly changing conditions, made for a highly competitive and memorable 10th anniversary edition.

Equally important was the continued partnership with the Oriental community. From host housing and meals to volunteer support and onshore engagement, the event remains a model for how college sailing and local communities can come together to create something special.

NC State Sailing extends its thanks to the Race Committee, event volunteers, the Bow to Stern team, and the entire Oriental community for delivering another outstanding SailPack weekend.
